The Saint Thomas Aquinas (STA) Varsity football team made history, on December nine, at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando. The Raiders are the first team in Broward County to win three consecutive state championships, according to the Assistant Principal of Student Activities, Mrs. Scott. With an outstanding victory against the Tampa Bay Panthers, St. Thomas really showed how much passion and heart that they put into this game. Until this game, the Panthers were undefeated with a record of thirteen wins and zero losses and Saint Thomas with a record of eleven wins and two losses. The Panthers were favored by two points, although the Raiders obviously made a statement, with a win of 45-6.
Mrs.Scott, explained that a total of 24 buses, with at least two chaperones per bus, transported Raider fans to the game. The fan-buses departed at around 1:00 PM and stopped at The Mall of Millenia, on the way to the event. Earlier that day, the football players had breakfast at the school, then boarded their buses at 8:00 AM.
According to Mrs. Scott “Every year has its own personality, the hype and the vibe. A lot of that is generated by the personality of the team; it’s all predicated on the success of the season… the attitude of the boys and the staff and the expectations are always to bring home the championship”. She also mentioned that what she liked the most about the game was “making it a fun memorable experience for the students and the fans.” Planning this event took a lot of time and coordination on the part of the athletics department and student activities. In the end, however, it really payed off when the STA Raiders, once again, took home the gold.
