Saint Thomas Aquinas High School (STA) is home to many clubs and honor societies including the French Club and the French Honor Society, both moderated by Ms. May Basse. The French Honor Society promotes interest in all the countries that have French culture. Since there are many French-speaking countries other than France, this society is a great opportunity for students to broaden their horizons. Belgium, Switzerland, Monaco, Central African Republic, Canada and Vietnam are just a few of the more than thirty countries that are all so different, but share this amazing culture.
To be eligible for induction into the French Honor Society, students must have taken the French II Honors and French III Honors courses and have maintained a 90% average. Candidates must also achieve a B average in all other classes. Finally students have to submit an application along with three teacher recommendations. Those who do not meet the requirements are still able to attend many of this honor society’s events! Anyone who is interested in this honor society should contact Ms. Basse in room 529.
Caitlin Field, President of the French Honor Society, is thrilled to have joined this organization. Caitlin said, “I’ve always had a passion for the French language and once I found out that we actually have a club … I was very excited so I decided to join. I think it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” Julia Perillo, Vice President of the French Honor Society, added that she has French relatives with whom she wants to communicate, “… so I decided to join this club to increase my knowledge and to communicate with them better… I also joined to show appreciation for this culture.”
The honor society hosts many great events, where the general student population can celebrate and participate in customs, which include enjoying music from the various French countries and trying international foods that will have you licking your fingers. Who doesn’t love chocolate filled crepes? If this doesn’t satisfy cravings, there is also a monthly bake sale with plenty of delicious treats. At the beginning of November, the honor society celebrated French Week. The next major event will be the International Fair in April. The French Honor Society looks forward to seeing you there!
