20th Anniversary Cappies Season

By Ethan Maus & Charlotte Berg

Congratulations to the 2022 Cappies Nominees! The South Florida Cappies is an organization dedicated to maintaining high standards for excellence in high school theater. The Cappies gives student critics the opportunity to review and write about plays produced by other local high schools. Top ranked student critics are published in local newspapers and online entertainment websites and have the opportunity to vote for outstanding performance awards at the end of each season.

The Cappies program started in 1999 when people wanted to draw positive attention towards teenagers and their accomplishments. The program was created in Fairfax by Bill Strauss and Judy Bowns. This year is the 20th Anniversary of South Florida Cappies, which was founded by J. P. Taravella theater teacher, Lori Sessions, in 2002.

In its 20 years of promoting excellence in the South Florida High School Theater community, the Cappies have given out thousands of accolades to young, aspiring artists and writers. The 2022 Gala was the first time in the past three years that student artists could gather to celebrate their achievements. On March 17th at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Saint Thomas Aquinas went into the evening with 11 nominations for their fall production of “The Addams Family.” Cameron Wasteney walked away with the award for Best Comedic Actor in a Musical. Congratulations to all of the nominees and winners in the 2021-2022 Cappies Season!
