Every October, since 1985, people have been honoring and showing support to those affected by breast cancer. Breast cancer is a disease where the cells in the breast grow uncontrollably. This type of cancer can come from DNA mutations meaning there are some ways to stay healthy and avoid the condition. Yet, sometimes cancer is inevitable due to inherited genetics.
Breast cancer is a very common type of cancer, so it is helpful to know that there are ways to help avoid it. Physical activity is one of the best and most obvious ways to stay healthy. Going for a walk, jog, or even playing sports are all effective ways to benefit your overall health and not just avoid the disease. Annual exams for breast cancer are a great way to catch the case early because if caught early, treatments can be more effective and beneficial.
There are many different ways communities can help show support for breast cancer. For example, many high schools show their support by wearing pink and collecting donations for research towards breast cancer foundations. Additionally, on October 16th, 2022, a “Bath Half Marathon” was held to increase awareness and raise money for the cause. Websites such as Breast Cancer Now hold a list of active events and activities where you can show your support throughout the month.
