At STA, many students do not know that you can easily earn one service hour each month by completing the C.A.R.E. club’s monthly cancer awareness survey. The survey was designed to educate and spread awareness of different cancers each month and possibly educate students on how they can be prevented. It is also helpful because students are able to learn the symptoms of these cancers so they can increase early detection and treatment.
To access the quiz, you first need to log onto Canvas and look for the PrimeTime section. Then, press the arrow button until you find the cancer prevention fact sheet and do the quick and easy survey! By doing this, you are given a service hour and gain more knowledge about different types of cancers. This month’s focus for cancer awareness is colon cancer, which is the world’s third most common type of cancer. In the year 2020 alone, over 2 million cases of colon cancer were diagnosed. Colon cancer can occur in both men and women, and may also be inherited through family members. It is known as sneaky cancer because people that have this cancer usually live a regular life with very mild symptoms, especially in the early stages where there are no symptoms at all. Since it is a very common cancer, scientists and doctors have found ways to make it easily treatable and manageable. Since the cancer grows slowly, you are able to get to the tumor with ample time and have it removed without going through many rounds of harsh chemotherapy. The process of having the tumor removed is called a colonoscopy and decreases your chances of cancer by 90%. Overall, colon cancer is always a frightening diagnosis but can be treated and doesn’t stop people from living happy and full lives.
