Chess is a game that requires strategy, patience and vision in order to win. In this game, the first player to checkmate the king wins! To do this, the king must be in check and have nowhere to go. There are a vast amount of ways to start a chess game and the better you know your opening, the better position you will have for the rest of the game.
The Chess Club at STA meets every Monday from 2:45-3:30. The club starts off by signing in everyone. One of the leaders of the Chess Club is Jimmy Januszka. After signing up, they start with a quick lesson that reviews important strategies you need to master the game of chess. These lessons are brief but precise and can help players of all different levels. The club then gets the chess board ready to start playing. There are over 15 boards of big chess pieces to make sure everyone can play. On any given Monday, the club can have around 10-15 people participating.
The Chess Club also sells sweatshirts for anyone who wants to fully immerse themselves in the Chess Club regalia! Furthermore, the club sends out email notifications to its members of nearby chess tournaments they can participate in.
The Raider Review interviewed fellow Chess Club members on their experience within the club. Sophomore KJ had this to say about STA’s Chess Club. “Chess helps benefit your brain activity. You can learn to problem solve, improve memory, and burn calories! Many of our members participate in tournaments where you can list what school you’re from and win competitions. My favorite part about the club is learning new ways to play because chess has a vast amount of strategies and theories you can apply to make yourself better.”
The Chess Club is an all inclusive club that helps build confidence in your ability to play chess and make new friends!
