St. Thomas Aquinas High School (STA) is well-known for many of the extracurricular activities it offers, especially the array of sports. With STA’s wide variety of sports, it could be easy for a few to hide in the shadows. One sport that has been flying under the radar is bowling. At the helm of STA’s bowling squad stands Spanish teacher, Mr. Henry Salazar. Not only is he a coach for the bowling team and moderator for the ping pong club, Mr. Salazar is a talented painter. He owns and operates a website where his paintings can be purchased.
The bowling team practices on Mondays and Wednesdays and competed in the Broward County High School Bowling League, on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the months of August, September, October and November. The team has previously received regional recognition in its tournaments, and the members are continuing to develop their skills.
Mr. Salazar became interested in coaching the bowling team, three years ago, while chaperoning the team for Mr. Schneck, the coach at that time. When Mr. Schneck retired, Coach George Smith turned to Mr. Salazar to keep this sport alive at STA. Mr. Salazar enthusiastically agreed and has just recently concluded his third season as coach.
No special skills are required to join the team; all are welcome! Mr. Salazar extended this invitation to prospective bowlers for the 2016-2017 season, ¨If you are interested in joining the bowling team you do not need experience – unless you are interested in a scholarship. If not, then wanting to be there is all you need!¨ Come on down and bowl a few with the STA team!
