The Champions League is upon us and the games so far have been electric! The league began with Paris Saint Germain (PSG) vs Bayern Munich; two powerhouse teams in Europe. The game ended in a close 1-0 win. PSG, however, are not out for the count yet. The structure of the tournament is two games, or “legs”, that are essentially two parts of the same game; any goal scored within the two legs is counted to the overall score. Essentially, a team can lose 4-0 in the first leg, but win 6-1 in the second leg. This would make the overall score 6-5. This means all PSG needs to do is score twice in the next leg to win the game. This structure continues all the way to the semi finals except for the final, which is only one game.
One of the favorites to win the Champions League is last year’s Premier League winner, Manchester City. They have a team stacked with world class talent and many superstars. Manchester City has the ability to beat all of the top teams in the world especially under the coaching of Pep Guardiola. Erling Halaand is Man City’s striker and he is having one of the best seasons of his life as the leading goalscorer in the Premier League with 25 goals!
Additionally, teams such as Tottenham Hotspur are trying to win their first trophy while teams like Liverpool are trying to get back after losing the final last year. The team in the best form is Napoli, of Serie A, with their star player, Victor Osimhen. They are at the top of their league and have the best performance so far. However, they are still considered underdogs because teams like Manchester City are also in form and hungry for a title. It seems like this year is going to be a special one, with many teams being as good as they’ve ever been and matches being as heated as ever. The 2023 Champions League Final is going to be one for the record books.
